THE TEMPLE OF HADRÍYAN
This monumental temple which stands on a block-foundation 7m. in height and 5.5 m. in length was constructed by Emperor Hadrien between the years 117-138 A.D. There are statues on the four rectangular bases. There is the bust of Cybele, the Mother of Jupiter, the wife of Saturn, the daughter of the Sky, god of the earth and of animals, in the middle of the arch over the four pillars. On the upper part of this arch there used to be a triangle On the plan the angles of it can be seen. The relief which was believed to turn those into stone, who beholded at it with evil-eye, on the upper part of the inner door is Medusa with beautiful hair. Later her hair looked like snakes. The old reliefs in front are the false ones the true pieces of which are in the Museum of Ephesus. Near them is the goddess of Chance, Nike.
