Born in 1929. the son of a Baptist minister, Martin Luther King. Jr., grew up in the American South, where racism had long been the source of social injustice, where black people had suffered discrimination for decades.
Inspired by Indian nationalist Mohandas Gandhi, this century's greatest exponent of nonviolence, Martin Luther King, Jr., came to the forefront of the black struggle for civil rights in 1955, when he acted as spokesman for protestors of racism in Montgomery, Alabama. There he displayed the physical courage, strength of mind, and passion which were to grip people everywhere and draw them into an active awareness of the oppression which plagued blacks and other minorities.
For the next 13 years Martin Luther King, Jr preached a message of love and reconciliation—even when imprisoned or threatened with death. He appealed to the conscience of a nation and instilled in his people the courage to fight for equality and their rightful status as free citizens.
All his life he spoke out against man's inhumanity to man, against the scourge of war and the plague of poverty. When he was assassinated in 1968 people of all political and religious persuasions mourned the passing of the black American preacher and leader who had helped raise the consciousness of mankind.

"Leadership." as Professor Arthur M.
