NATIONAL PARKS OF JAPAN
Mountains and water: the mountains, invariably volcanoes, and often active; the water, lapping the shores of pine-clad islands, spreading itself fanlike over rocks in mountain gorges, or lying placid in paddy fields reflecting the graceful summits of the mountains.
This is the landscape of much of Japan and of many of her twenty-seven national parks. Mount Fuji of course belongs to one and the shrine of the Sun Goddess at Ise forms part of another, as do the serrated peaks of Japan's Alps and the geological wonders of her coastline.
But that's not all. Japan reaches as far north as Maine and further south than Florida, and this enormous climatic variety is reflected in her national parks. Hokkaido with its subarctic moxmrains and lakes has five parks, while Japan's subtropical islands, complete with shimmering beaches and coral reefs, contribute a further two.

Travel writing, has for centuries been regarded in Japan as a form of literature second to none. Dorothy Britton and Mary Sutherland carry on this literary tradition, presenting a piaure of each park that is both informative, relaxed, and descriptive.
Almost a hundred color photographs embroider the text, illuminating the extraordinary range of the Japanese landscape—from the fierce reds and golds of autumn on the highlands to the subtle shades of pink and green in the valleys in spring to the pure white of mountaintop snow.
And always in the background are the stories of the prowess of gods, the feats of endurance of Buddl iist ascetics, and the fascinatingly whimsical names that the Japanese, out of their love for nature, bestow on rivers and mountains and islands.
Mary Sutherland was born and grew up in Cleveland Heights. Ohio. She graduated from Manhattan ville College in New York and received an M.A. degree from Harvard University. Between 1969 and 1979, she lived in Tokyo, working in the publishing industry. For many years, she co-hosted a weekly educational radio program produced by the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK). To collect material for this book, she traveled the length and breadth of Japan. She now lives m New York City.
Dorothy Britton—writer, poet, and composer—is half English and half American and was born in apan. She was educated in all three countries. At Mills College. California. she studied composition with Darius Milhaud. Besides her music, which includes scores for many prize-winning films on Japan, she has published poems, essays, articles, and books in both English and Japanese. Dorothy Britton has traveled extensively in Japan, describing her impressions in many publications. Vissza
