Nazan OI?er was born in Istanbul in 1942. After finishing her high school studies in the Austrian Girls' Lycee she continued her education and research in ethnology, history and art history in Federal Germany, receiving her degree from Munich University. Since her return to Turkey she has worked and continued her research in a number of places in Anatolia; she has worked on documentary films on traditional handicraft arts for Educational Film Archives in Turkey and Europe; and, for a number of years she was on the faculty of the Social Science Department of Yildiz University. In 1978, after having served asthe head of the Carpet-Kilim Section of the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, she became the Museum Director, a post she continues to hold. Nazan has published writings on traditional arts, cultural change, Turkish art, and museology in a number of foreign languages and has participated in the preparation and display of numerous exhibitions in Turkey and abroad.
