íii . i i The history of pharmacy in Hungary has its beginnings in the Middle Ages. Early documents and pictures provide sources of information about the work of healing and about the pharmacies first established in the thirteenth century. Only from later periods have relics of these activities survived: the first seventeenth-century pharmacy at Vöröskő, founded by a Hungárián nobleman, in which there are Renaissance motifs, and the richly furnished Jesuit pharmacy at Kőszeg, built already in the Baroque style. The author describes apothecary vessels that have survived from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The most beautiful of the pharmacy interiors and furnishings are shown from the Empire and Biedermeier periods. The exceptionally diverse rrlaterial is illustrated with 40 colour plates and 15 black-and-white plates.
