REQUIEM FOR A WREN
^^o one now needs to be told that ^ as a storyteller Nevil Shute has no living superior.
In this novel we can learn—most of us for the first time—^just what it must have been like to have had a part in the preparations for ' Overlord the invasion of Normandy, and to be waiting for the balloon to go up.

Janet, daughter of a university professor, had qualified as an Ordnance Wren. Bill Duncan was a frogman sergeant in the Royal Marines. He was an Australian, and this story is told by his brother Alan. The war over, Alan could not settle down and run his father's large farm in Australia. This quest for Janet, whom he had met only once and whom he was to find too late, makes the story. Its title, Requiem for a Wren, reveals much. The fact that most of the time we know more about Janet's life than Alan does, gives a peculiar poignancy to the narrative, and is part of the ingenious, but not too clever or incredible, construction of this very moving novel.
