Here, in a collector's volume, is a glimpse of New Hampshire as it was. Illustrated by poetry, prose, and pictures is a breathtaking countryside that has withstood the passage of time.
Author/photographer Wallace Nutting depicts the lush scenery of one of the nation's most beautiful mountain states. Nutting said of his goal in this venture: "we feel the obligation and the inclination to record for the native son of New Hampshire the things which his eye loves and which form a part of his daily life." So here he shows not only the postcard scene of the beautiful views that this state is famous for, but also the picturesque and charming day-to-day surroundings that have made an indelible impression on generations born in New Hampshire and visitors.
Included in the collection of photographs is the village meetinghouse in Hancock, an old schoolhouse in Westmoreland, farmers gathering hay in Tuftonboro, scenes of turn-of-the-century homelife, and the interiors of some of the beautiful homes.
As an alternate to the photographs, the author illustrates some of his favorite scenes with beautifully detailed drawings. His subjects include the doorways and fireplaces of the older homes.
Nutting admits to the special feeling about New Hampshire that is^obvious in his work. Though the latest of these photographs was taken in 1923, they retain all their style and beauty, making this a classic book for anyone interested in history, photography, and beauty.
