NEW PHOTOGRAMS
. under new editorship, with a refreshingly new approach, presenting for permanent record a selection of the world's finest photographs. All aspects of pictorial photography are represented—contemporary and traditional, illustrative and experimental, while a section of outstanding colour pictures gives full prominence to this rapidly developing field of photography.
The annual's task is to present fairly the work which is most representative of current thought, and the Editor's aim has been to encourage sincerity of treatment, rejecting any but genuine attempts at using the photographic medium with integrity. While, therefore, it contains much that will please the ardent traditionalist, the new edition gives striking emphasis to the change of outlook that has taken place in recent years— and this is also the subject of an inspiring contribution from John Bardsley, a.r.p.s., the President of the Royal Photographic Society.
As a study of the pictures will show, the photographer of today has a much wider choice of expression than has ever before been possible, through modern developments in equipment and materials; the relationship between these and the pictures he produces is discussed by the Editor in an introductory article.
There are two important new features which will be greatly appreciated by all photographers keen to benefit from the achievements of others. The inclusion of brief technical details relating to camera, film and exposure against each plate will enable them to have at a glance the plain mechanical facts behind each picture. Then in the critical commentary at the end of the book these facts are amplified to explain what each photographer was setting out to achieve, and in many cases the story behind the picture.
The new photograms will thus not only be a permanent source of great pleasure for all who appreciate fine pictures, but will be of real practical value to all who want to make them.
