The present city of New York was originally a Dutch settlement called New Amsterdam. It was captured and renamed by the British and it has now grown into the largest city in the U.S.A. It is also the country's leading commercial and financial centre, and it is certainly one of the busiest seaports in the world.

Well-known examples are the Irish, Jewish, Negro, Chinese and Puerto Rican areas.
New Yorlis Manhattan skyline, with its huge skyscrapers, must surely be one of the most impressive and easily recognized in the world. The famous Empire State Building, at one time the world's highest building, has now been superseded, even in New York, by the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. Other notable buildings include the headquarters of the United Nations, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the modern Lincoln Arts Centre which comprises an opera house, concert hall, theatre, library and school of music.
New York's best-known street is Broadway over sixteen miles long and renowned for its theatres. Another is Fifth Avenue, a name synonymous with elegant and expensive shops. It is here that the annual Easter Parade is held when, for once, the street is closed to the normally nonstop, noisy traffic.
Within this fine book superb colour photographs of these and other places in New York reflect the unique character of a very exciting city Vissza
