The author holds that the study of religion can be a scientific discipline, based on dispassionate observation and sympathetic intuition for the humán feelings that formulated the phenomena. Whether guided by God or spirits or the hope for nirvana, men have always tried to see beyond their senses. How they interpret what they see, we can observe. Whafthey see we can evaluate but may not judge.
In this study of great world religions the author shows that religions grow and change and affect each other just as living organisms do. He points out that throughout history and beyond the farthest reaches of mankind's earliest cultures, religion has been a permanent feature of the humán record. Oracle-bones and cave-paintings, crude clay figurines and colossal pyramids, modes of social organization and migrations of peoples - all attest to this fact. One cannot understand humán history without knowing something about man's religions.
