NUCLEAR MOMENTS is the first and only book written in English since the war to cover the field of nuclear moments for the stable nuclei and for the radio-active nuclei whose lifetimes are sufficiently long to be measured by techniques similar to those used with stable nuclei. In five parts, it discusses both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the measurement techniques and of the observed results.
This book originated from the author's section on "Nuclear Moments and Statistics" in Volume I of Experimental Nuclear Physics, edited by Emilio Segre. That section was to be concerned only with the aspects of the subject that were predominantly of interest to nuclear physics. After its publication, Dr. Ramsey was called upon by his readers to expand material touching upon chemistry and the rapidly-growing field of solid state physics. This book is the answer to that demand.

Dr. Ramsey begins his book by introducing the subject and defining the quantities concerned in nuclear moment measurements. He then describes the interaction between nuclear moments and atomic and molecular fields. His third section provides a description of the experimental methods used in measuring nuclear moments and their derived molecular quantities. In the fourth section, he summarizes the results of significance to nuclear physics and the implications of these results in nuclear theory. Finally, he describes the results of special significance to chemistry and solid state physics. An Appendix amplifies the discussion of nuclear theory.
