WHEN IT BECAME KNOWN that England's 6-3 defeat by Hungary in 1953 led the visitors to dedicate the victory to a 71-year-old British football coach, Jimmy Hogan, he fiercely defended his patriotism against accusations of "traitor". He had also been credited with starting
Germany on their successful path. He inspired the Dutch, the French, the Swiss and the fabulous Austrian "Wunderteam" of the 1930s. A clever but underrated player for Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Rochdale, Fulham and Swindon Town, he became the youngest ever British trainer to go abroad. His story is one of great importance to
football but also an ad venture of war-time internment in Germany, escapes, humiliation by the Football Association, dedication, amazing skill and campaigns by the Press to have him made England manager. Among those he taught
were Ron Atkinson, Tommy Docherty, Peter McParland and Helmut Schoen, who all recall his influence on them in their early playing days in PROPHET OR TRAITOR?
