Norman Lewis was born in London in 1908 and was educated at Enfteld Grammar School. He has always travelled and before the war had wandered through Spain, North Africa, the Balkans, the Red Sea, Southern Arabia, and Mexico. During the Second World War he served in the Intelligence Corps in Algéria, Tunisia, the Middle East, Italy, and Austria, and aíter the war spent three winters in Indo-China (writing a travel book, A Dragon Apparent), Burma (Golden Earth), and Siam (a növel, A Single Pilgrim). He still travels as much as he can, and lives, whenever possible, in Spain. His recreation is amateur anthropology. His other books are Sand and Sea in Arabia, Samara, Within the Labyrinth, The Volcanoes Above Us (alsó in Penguins), and The Changing Sky.
