As an avid reader of Gothic novels, Catherine is thrilled at the prospect of visiting a real Gothic abbey, little realising that her romantic expectations are to be disappointed—just as Northanger Abbey thwarts the conventions of Gothic romance.
Jane Austen was born in 1775 at Steventon in Hampshire, and began writing in her teens. Sense and Sensibility was published in, 1811, followed two years later by Pride and Prejudice and then by Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816).
