Dubai has emerged as the city of the new millennium. Its transformation from a humble fishing and pearling community to a busy modern city and prosperous port has been dramatic. As little as ten years ago the World Trade Centre was the point around which navigation to Abu Dhabi centered. Now it seems a little lost among the huge skyscrapers that are creeping down the Sheikh Zayed Highway towards it. Simple single-storey houses, made of coral from the surrounding sea, have now been replaced with glass and metal towers and luxury villas.

While so much has changed in Dubai, a greater importance has recently been placed on preserving the culture and history of the emirate. Without saving these reminders of the past, the younger generations will never appreciate the early years and will know only the present. This book follows those wise decisions on preservation by illustrating Dubai past and present. It is important to highlight and appreciate Dubai's rich and colourful past. This book acts as a tribute to the success story that accompanies the Dubai of today.
Many photographers from different walks of life, in Dubai for different reasons, contributed to the "Then" aspect of this book. Fortunately, most people kept a record of where and when the photographs were taken. This allowed us to piece together most of the pictorial history of Dubai. In some places we relied on photographers' memories, this only added to the interest of the book. The "Now" part was far easier, weather permitting of course. While Simone Nowell sat hunched over a hot keyboard tapping out the text, Robert Nowell climbed buildings, sand dunes and sections of scaffolding looking for that perfect shot. It all came together and the result is "Now & Then Dubai".
"Now & Then Dubai" is a pictorial guide to the beautiful emirate of Dubai, past and present. It provides an insight to a city that has been transformed in just a few decades.
the United Arab Emirates in 1971 paved the way for dramatic and unexpected transformations in this part of the world. The discovery of oil
financed the incredibly swift development of the
city, but it was only by carefully laid planning
strategies that Dubai has achieved its world
renowned status of today. The phenomenal
economic success of the city has not affected
the warmth or friendliness of our people.
Visitors can expect the same spontaneously warm welcome that has always bie'n offered to travellers to our region. . .
Dubai is remarkable in that it is a city transformed from a small fishing and pearling community into a modern, cosmopolitan centre of commerce. Tile people of Dubai have retained their inherited Islamic traditions and values whilst playing an important role in shaping modern Dubai. The men and women of the Emirates have faced up to the new challenges of the 21st century with remarkable strength.
This beautiful book provides a permanent and lasting reminder of Dubai, past and present. Our culture and heritage have been captured in beautiful and poignant photographs over the past 100 years. It seems only fitting that in this, the Year 2000, "Now & Then Dubai" should be a tribute to Dubai and the accomplishments of our great leaders and industrious people.
On behalf of my fellow countrymen, 1 hope you enjoy your stay in Dubai and remember, through the pages of this book, the transformation that now permits us to welcome the world to our enchanting country.
