with the development of nuclear reactors for commercial power stations and mobile systems, the importance of designing economical and minimum-weight shields has grown over the past few years. This Monograph presents the latest information on this new subject, both in the theoretical and practical aspects. In addition, much experimental data and information are included.
After an initial chapter introducing the concepts involved, others deal with gamma-radiation, the sources met with in a reactor, the mathematical formulation of the distribution of gamma-rays in shield materials and experimental results are quoted. Neutron sources, and neutron interactions with shield materials are discussed; the mathematical methods available, diffusion theory, age theory and removal theory are described and their limitations mentioned.
