The Budapest Museum of Fine Arts is considered one of the great museums of Europe. The variety of its holdings, its historical continuity and the large number of masterpieces have ensured the museum a secure place among the major art collections. Through personal experience and publications, it has been known for many years among artists, art historians and art lovers; now, however, thanks to the large number of visitors and faster communication, it has drawn more general interest. Unlike a great many museums in Europe, the foundation of the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts is not linked to royal or princely art holdings but to the Hungarian national revival. Its present shape, too, dates back only to 1906, when the museum opened its doors, though its holdings and structure reflect almost two centuries of collecting work and cultural policy. The museum was born of the merger of a number of collections, galleries and foundations, and its holdings and fields of collecting have not only grown through the years, but also undergone change. For a long time it also housed Hungarian art works, but the speedy growth of the two major collections soon called for a separation of domestic and foreign art. In this way the Hungarian National Gallery was founded in 1957. Located in Buda Castle, it now unites all the treasures of Hungarian art, while since 1974—in accordance with its aim as expressed in the year of its foundation "to represent a link between the past and the future, to preserve the most worthwhile artistic traditions, to provide a foundation for progress, and be an eternal source of good taste and inspire a better knowledge of art"—the Museum of Fine Arts has dedicated itself exclusively to collecting and exhibiting foreign art.
