The future of the New Year's Concerts is certain - despite all possible crises that could arise. It is safe in the hearts of the people who love this event. It seems one could hardly imagine a future without this concert - at least a future lasting longer than a year, the ^interval between two New Year's Concerts. Johann Strauss Jnr. and Johann Strauss Snr. give their blessings through the "Blue Danube" waltz and the "Radetzky March". It is a musical blessing for the whole world, sent out from Vienna: Urbi et orbi - to the city and the globe. Only now does the New Year really start, when the violins begin to play: as if from nothing, a storm of applause breaks out. A sudden stillness fills the Golden Hall, broken only by the tender vibrato of the violin. When the side-drum comes in, the people in the hall start clapping to the rhythm of a march. The conductor turns towards the audience and conducts with his back to the orchestra and everybody - including the enormous community of...
