In the last two decades there has been considerable progress in medical genetics. This new information has become available to an increasingly large number of affected patients and their families, primarily because of the development of genetic counselling centres in most countries. In the last two decades there has been considerable progress in medical genetics. This new information has become available to an increasingly large number of affected patients and their families, primarily because of the development of genetic counselling centres in most countries. Prenatal diagnosis is one of the most rapidly developing areas in obstetrics, not only as regards the number of patients evaluated but also as that of conditions which may be diagnosed. Prenatal diagnosis with the option of termination of pregnancy provides important reassurance for couples at high risk of serious genetic disorders. The role obstetric genetics plays in decreasing the number of tragedies in the life of a family is obvious, let alone its social benefits. This textbook is highly informative, showing a thorough knowledge of clinical genetics as well as the professional approach of the practising obstetrician. The book has been produced to meet the needs of medical students for a comprehensive account of the basic principles and obstetric applications of modem clinical genetics. It consists of 80 chapters which cover all problems in clinical genetics and obstetrics, concerning the prevention of genetic diseases and/or congenital malformations. The text, based on the author's general and practical lecture courses developed since their inception in 1974, is a useful aid for all clinicians interested in genetics and particularly for obstetricians, paediatricians and clinical geneticists.
