Until quite recently, andrology was considered one aspect of such medical specialty fields as endocrinology, urology, psychiatry, neurology, genetics, and pediatrics. Singularly, these branches of medicine offered only fragmentary data concerning the male reproductive system. The recent grouping of this information into one autonomous area of study offers a clearer insight into the theoretical and clinical problems of male physiology and pathophysiology and facilitates the clinician's task in approaching and resolving the practical problems he or she faces.

This volume focuses on one of the most fundamental and heavily debated problems in andrology: oligozoospermia. It explores such topics as the meaning of the term "oligozoospermia" in relation to the fertilizing ability of the seminal fluid; the mechanisms leading to this deficiency; and its cytological, cytochemical, molecular, ultra-structural, genetic, immunological, neuroendocrine, and endocrine aspects. Chapters also consider the appropriateness of therapeutic treatment, the diagnostic evaluation of its benefits, and the choice between homologous and heterologous artificial insemination in those cases in which it is to be employed.
The multidisciplinary nature of this volume will enhance the reader's understanding of these and related problems. It will be of particular interest to endocrinologists, urologists, gynecologists, and general practitioners confronted with problems concerning fertility and reproduction. Medical students will find it a valuable supplement to textbooks. Vissza
