The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe
(REC) is an independent, non-profit, regional organization devoted to
the improvement of the environment in central and eastern europe.

The REC was established in 1990 by the United States, Hungary and
the Commission of the European Communities. Additional donors
include Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France,

Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland. Today,

there are 24 signatory governments to its charter.
The REC's mission is to assist in solving the environmental prob-
lems in Central and Eastern Europe by encouraging cooperation

among nongovernmental organizations, governments, businesses,
and other environmental stakeholders, by supporting the free

exchange of information and by promoting public participation in
