"I know the name, but the face is unfamiliar" — we might say this of many authors, sometimes even of our favourites ones. Mr. Warner presents here a portrait gallery of a hundred illustrious British writers, from Chaucer to Orwell, while his text gives us in a nutshell the basic facts of their lives and work. The wealth and variety are remarkable. We have portraits or sketches by famous artists — Holbein, Lely, Kneller, Hogarth, Reynolds, Raeburn, Rossetti, John, and many others: there are little-known pictures, such as Hazlitt's self-portrait or the hitherto unpublished study of Cobbett; for Matthew Arnold and several later writers excellent photographs have been used. A few only of the great are omitted — Malory, Webster and Marlowe, for instance — because no authenticated representation of them exists.
"And did you once see Shelley plain?" Here is a wonderful opportunity to study at leisure the faces of men and women who have made English literature.
