Oni is the Polish for "They" - but who are "They"? They are the shadowy leaders of the Soviet bloc, revered Party members of unrestricted power and privilege whose methods, and backgrounds, still remain largely unknown.
In the early 1980s, when Poland was in crisis, the distinguished Polish journalist Teresa Toranska was able to interview a number of her country's former leaders, veteran communists whose careers began in the days of Stalin, and for the first time pierce this rule by anonymity. The result is a chilling, revealing and hitherto unrecorded account of how the Soviet Union secured its grip on Eastern Europe after World War II and in particular of those it chose to run Poland's Moscow-controlled governments from 1944 to 1956.

Although now disgraced, such people were once Poland's political élite - and Stalin's puppets. The story of how they betrayed their country, told in their own words, is a remarkable and salutary reminder of how and why Eastern Europe came to be what it is today.
Teresa Toranska was bom in Wolkowysk, now a part of the Soviet Union, in 1946. A graduate of Warsaw's Faculty of Law and School of Journalism, she worked for the Polish weekly Kultura from 1975 to 1981. The articles that constitute Oni were first published in Poland during the period of martial law by Przedswit, an underground publishing house.
