Austria is no longer an "island of the blessed", as a pope once remarked. Lately it has attracted worldwide attention, and the commentaries attached, both at home and abroad, have not always been too complimentary. There is the imminent danger of a negative myth being created. To counteract this myth is the purpose of this book. Austria is being viewed from various angles: historical-political, economic and cultural. A team of prominent scholars and experts has undertaken to put the image of Austria straight by probing into the country's past, present and, if possible, future, impartially weighing the pros and cons. This book, addressed as it is especially to the interested reader abroad, has been written under the assumption that love to one's country does not foreclose criticism, nor does patriotism necessarily imply the whitewashing of existing faults. HANNES ANDROSCH, banker. Born 1938 in Vienna. During studies (University of Commerce, Vienna) politically active; chairman, Socialist Students Organization, 1960/61. Elected M.P., 1967. Minister of finance in the Kreisky administration, 1970—1980; vice-chancellor, 1976. President of Creditanstalt-Bankverein, Austria's biggest bank, 1981. Various publications on economics and monetary policy. Lives in Vienna.
HELMUT H. HASCHEK, banker. Born 1930 in Vienna. In 1954 joined Österreichische Kontrollbank (Federal Export Financing Board); 1971 chairman of the board of directors; since 1972 president. Honorary member, Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. Numerous publications on financial policy, capitalism and export financing. Lives in Vienna.
OTTO BREICHA, museum director, art critic, writer. Born 1932 in Vienna. Since 1980 director, municipal collection "Rupertinum", Salzburg. Numerous publications on literature and the arts of the 20th century. Since 1966 editor of "protokolle", a periodical on literature and the arts. Lives in Salzburg.
ALFONS DALMA, journalist and political writer. Born 1919. Since 1975 on special assignment in Rome; foreign correspondent for ORF and the dailies "Die Presse", Vienna, "Die Welt", Hamburg. Lives in Vienna.
HERMANN FILLITZ, art historian, university professor, museum director. Born 1924 in Vienna. Since 1974 full professor of art history, University of Vienna. Since 1982 Director, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Lives in Vienna. Vissza
