This is the first Oxford dictionary to be illustrated. Dispersed through the text are somé 1,700 text-figures of plánt and animal forms, the parts of the humán body, geometrical figures, machines, architectural details, costumes, and other works of man and nature. As the title implies, the book is something more than a dictionary. It lays emphasis upon the 'things' which words denote, rather than the words themselves and their usage. It provides all the information about spelling, pronunciation and meaning which is expected of a popular dictionary, and it gives etymologies when they are likely to interest the non-specialist, but it alsó contains many facts which usually have to be sought in an encyclopaedia. Special care has been taken with definitions of scientific terms. There are numerous entries on proper names-persons of the Bible and of legend, statesmen, writers, famous places, historical incidents and so on.
