The genes, which are loc^ted in the chromosomes of the cell, existed in our ancestors and will persist in our chiidren's children after we have gone. They are responsible for what we are. The physical sciences converged on the chromosorne, giving us new insights into íts structure and function, the mechanism of replication, the linear sequence of its repeating units which form the genetic code, and the process by which the code is transcribed into specific protein structure. The chromosomes and their genes occupy a central position in the science of genetics and are acknowledged to be the biological basis of humán variation in health and disease.
