The opening articles concentrate on general aspects of depression, on problems of terminology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and classification. Two papers by Indian and Latin American authors stress the importance of cross-cultural research. In the following studies, special diagnostic and therapeutic problems with children, adolescents, and elderly patients are discussed, as well as immediate and long-term management of patients who lived through catastrophes. An important part of the issue is devoted to new findings and techniques in pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, as well as special therapeutic approaches, such as light therapy and sleep deprivation therapy. Social aspects of depression are covered and its connections with suicide, delinquency, and alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse. Several papers focus on another frequent feature of depression, namely its somatic manifestations. A richly illustrated final article outlines diverse creative therapies. Taken together, the papers presented in this special issue give a comprehensive overview of current research on depression. Vissza
