This volume, containing invited lectures of the
IUPAP International Conference on Statistical
Physics held in Budapest, reflects the develop-
mental tendencies in the statistical physics of
recent years. The main emphasis is laid on the
renormalization group theory of Wilson (first
holder of the Boltzmann gold medal) that en-
abled a breakthrough in the theory of phase
transformations and critical phenomena to be
produced. Together with the original ideas of
the renormalization group theory its most re-
cent advances are also covered in this volume.
Other aspects of the theory of phase transitions
are also treated. In addition, the theory of open
systems — systems far from thermal equilib-
rium — constitutes the subject of several papers,
while excellent account is given of certain prob-
lems of kinetic theory.
