PALAZZO ALTIERI
Unknown to many in its antique role of self contained town entity, Palazzo Altieri is one of the many hidden jewels of Baroque Rome that the modern city contains.
To the hurried glance of the passers-by and to those who work today in its rooms filled with history, in its richly decorated saloni, the edifice offers a now tired façade bearing the signs of age and pollution. But it is enough to cross the entranceway and penetrate the deep courtyard to forget the chaos of the city and remain fascinated by the majesty and absolute equilibrium of forms and spaces which constitute the central moment of the activity of the Roman architect Giovanni Antonio De Rossi who, as Gianfranco Spagnesi notes in his introduction "mastered in this accomplishment, the theme of the palace, offering solutions of great ability and professional skill".

The monumental "workshop" of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Altieri, a complex and articulated edifice, growing through distinct phases of realization, is, today, the seat of the Associazione Bancaria Italiana and seat of representation of the Banca Popo-lare di Novara, as well as being the residence of the descendants of those Altieri who contributed to the pontifical city of the second half of the 17th century.
The intention of this volume is to narrate, with the contribution of noted scholars, architects, and art historians and with the support of ample and meticulous photographic documentation, the history of a palace, protagonist, in its present day reality, of the economic and financial life of the nation.
