Damien was an ordinary boy, an ordinary brother, an ordinary priest. But he took on the job that no one else wanted - the care of a leprosy colony on Molokai in the Hawaiian islands.
Before the days of treatment or cure, fighting the terrible conditions that prevailed when he arrived and the apathy of authority, he gave these outcasts back their humán dignity - and in the end died as they died, a vietim of the disease.
By his life and his death, he forced the world to remember these people whom it had found convenient to forget - and to work for the eradication of leprosy worldwide.
We are not there yet, but the memory of Damien is with all those who continue the fight.
