Most sacred texts describe Paradise as a garden. Within the walls of this garden, the senses are aroused by the abundance of fruit, the color and scent of flowers, the velvety softness of the ground, the murmur of water and the music of birdsong. Drawing extensively on Arabo-Andalusian traditions, garden designers Eric Ossart and Arnaud Maurieres create true Paradise gardens using a contemporary design vocabulary. In this book they take us on a voyage of discovery to their sources of inspiration in France, Spain, Tunisia, Morocco, and Egypt and, through their own creations, help us identify the esthetic elements that give these gardens their power and originality. They explain some of the techniques used and suggest which plants can be used to create a Paradise on earth in any climate.

Éric Ossart and Arnaud MAURIERES are part of the new school of landscape gardening in France. For almost fifteen years they have been designing and restoring gardens in France, Tunisia, Egypt and Lebanon. They draw freely on Arabo-Andalusian traditions to create true Paradise gardens using a contemporary design vocabulary. Arnaud MAURIERES is also the founder and director of the École Méditerranéenne des Jardins in Grasse, in the south of France, and for six years Éric OSSART has been in charge of plant composition at the international garden festival of Chaumont-sur-Loire. Both now concentrate exclusively on garden design and are currently creating gardens for the Musée National du Moyen Age in Paris and the Palm Tree Museum of the Tozeur oasis in Tunisia. Every summer you can visit their own Paradise garden at Cordes-sur-Ciel in the south of France.
Joëlle Caroline mayer and Gilles Le Scanff, who specialize in the photography of still lifes and gardens, have been working together since 1977. Their photographs can be seen in most European gardening and home decoration publications, including Mon jardin et ma maison, Cent idées jardin, and Garden Illustrated, and they have also illustrated a number of books. For some years now they have been working in collaboration with Eric Ossart and Arnaud Maurieres and the four together have created a number of exhibitions including photographs and temporary garden installations.
