Flanders In Creative Contrasts
Patricia Carson presents Flemish history as a mosaic of unending variety created from numerous contrasts. Every country contains contrasts, but in Flanders their multiplicity and range in a country only one-fiftieth the size of Texas is unique. Details bring the broad lines of history to life. It becomes real when we realise, as the author points out, that Lambert of Saint-Omer must have had chilblains as he sat writing the Liber Floridus in his freezing monastery in 1120, and that what the mighty Emperor Charles V really liked doing was taking clocks and watches to pieces, and that the artist Constant Permeke could not paint without being able to see the grey waves of the North Sea.
Patricia Carson, who was bom in Great Britain, studied history in the University of London. She has lived in Afsnee since marrying the historian Raoul Van Caenegem and has written about English and African history, a biography of James Van Artevelde, and the well-known... Tovább

Patricia Carson, who was bom in Great Britain, studied history in the University of London.
