China may be said to have 3,000 years of history and 600,000 years of prehistory. The discovery of Peking Man in the 1930s suggests that the Chinese people originated in the country in which they still live. Chinese civilization developed in almost complete isolation down to the third century BC with its own religion, its own intellectual and cultural traditions, and its own ideographic script.
