About the series
The Making of the Past
The Making of Ihe Past is a new series designed to provide a complete survey of the early history of the world as revealed by archaeology and related disciplines. Its subject is a new history, the making of a new past, freshly uncovered and reconstructed in recent years by skilled speciahsts. Beautifully illustrated with photographs, many in full colour, and with maps, diagrams and line drawings including reconstructions, the series will be completely authoritative and up to date, while losing nothing of the excitement of recent discoveries about the ancient past.

China may be said to have 3,000 years of history and 600,000 years of prehistory. The discovery of Peking Man in the 1930s suggests that the Chinese people originated in the country in which they still live. Chinese civilization developed in almost complete isolation down to the third century BC with its own religion, its own intellectual and cultural traditions, and its own ideographic script. It was ordy then, after a series of foreign wars, that the Chinese discovered the existence of a whole world beyond the Great Wall—India, Persia and Rome. The establishment of the Great Silk Road ensured a reliable trade route and sparked off a cultural flowering that endured throughout antiquity. This book tells the fascinating story of this remarkable civilization incorporating the valuable evidence recently adduced by Chinese archaeologists.
Visual stories portray in words and pictures the Imperial Palace and Forbidden City of Peking, whose appearance today differs little from the buildings of antiquity; the excavation of the tomb of Prince Liu Sheng and Princess Tou Wan and the amazing finds made there including the famous jade suits; the conventions of Chinese landscape painting compared with the reality of China's topography; and guardians of the tombs, figurines and models from funerary contexts which reveal so many aspects of everyday life in ancient China.
