The widespread notion that the art produced in the Middle Ages was "barbarian," coarse and uncultured, lastedfor centuries. It wasn't until the first decades ofthe 1800's, in fact, at the height of the Romantic era, that a vast movement towards reevaluating the "dark ages" developed. The extraordinary creative productivity which pulsated through western art in the first two centuries after the turn of the millennium was soon widely acknowledged. The term "Romanescjue" is usually used to define the art ofthis period"
In the territories subject to Matilda of Tuscany, Romanespjue art took a path al its own, achieved through an architectural culture with uniform, unifying characteristics, the fruit ofintense efforts in planning the architecture and sculpture commissioned by the Countess. This path produced masterpieces of extremely high and unicjue artistic value, such as the Cathedral of Modena

The artistic and creative peaks attained in the Cathedral of Modena remained without ecjual in the province: this monument was "too new and too originál" to winfavour in the smail provinciai centres with their backward tastes, while the seed sown by Lanfranco and Wiligelmus "bore fruit, invigorated by grafts from new shoots, in the great cathedrals" in the Po valley and elsewhere. Despite this fact, the Cathedral represented, throughout Modenese territory, a model to be imitated, often in its details rather than on the whole.
