Bushwomen and children, drovcrs, missionaries, rogues, miners, navvies, stockmen, trackcrs, mailmcn, postmistresses, teachcrs and seamen - the hcrocs of our Outback come in all guises, from all parts of the continent, from the past and the present. Yet those of us who have never known the Outback intimately, as Patsy Adam-Smith does, tend to forget the realities of life that confronted our forbears in the bush, and what guts it took to survive them. The truth is, Australia was 'the last of the continents to be made known and we were the last of the old-type pioncers'. Many of our own grandparents, even our own parents, were among the unknown, uncelebrated herocs who faced the terrors of the Outback.
