As Nazi tanks rolled toward Moscow in December 1941, a pocket-sized instruction manual was rolling off Soviet presses. The Partisan s Companion begins with Joseph Stalin's fiery exhortations to destroy the "fascist dogs," followed by chapter after chapter of guerrilla warfare and survival tactics to give the ragtag partisan defenders a fighting chance against Hitler's army.
The original book had an initial printing of 50,000 copies and is of historic note as the first step toward the development of an organized Soviet partisan movement. Prior to this, partisans were, at worst, uncoordinated and militarily ignorant patriotic civilians banding together or, at best, the remnants of decimated, dispersed regular forces.
