FROM THE MYTHS TO MODERN PEARL CULTURE
The first astronauts to the moon gave the earth a fitting name: the blue planet. The migthy expanses of water are too great for the glittering blue that radiates out far into cosmic space to be diminished by the color of the continents.
The largest of the oceans, its waters filling the seemingly immeasurable area of the Indián Pacific basin on both sides of the equator, is where the pearl oysters live. They produce a unique natural beauty, a shimmering jewel: the pearl.
The pearl and its history, which is an inseparable part of the cultural history of mankind, is the subject of this book. The pearl and its history, which is an inseparable part of the cultural history of mankind, is the subject of this book. The story is traced írom the myths sur-rounding the natural pearl, through different ages and continents, to the cultured pearl of today, the result of scientific research and brilliant enterprise.
Dávid Doubilet is a speciálist in underwater photography. His books and reportages for National Geographic have enjoyed worldwide circulation. Here he shows us the submarine habitats of the pearl oysters and the careful, elaborate eff-orts of the people who culture pearls, in captivating photographs accompanied by fascinating travel reports. He takes us into the five main regions of the world where pearls are grown, and allows us an insight into an activity that is still a sealed book even to many experts. But it is an activity which today enables women all over the world to delight in pearls and adorn themselves with them.
Cultured pearls and fashion - it would be hard to imagine a more intimate connection. It was the dawn of a new era, at the beginning of 1920, when fashion appeared in the form of affordable ready-to-wear, together with cultured pearls. That was the year, 1921, when the firm of Schoeffel was founded. It is now one of the leading cultured pearl enterprises in the world. The company presents this book to mark its 75th anniversary. It gives us a comprehensive account of the past and present story of the pearl that is probably unique anywhere in the world. Vissza
