Pécs, the most beautifully situated town in Transdanubia, lies in the embrace of the Mecsek Hills. Sopianae, the forerunner of today's town, was founded by the Romans at the beginning of the second century A.D. Pécs is a northern outpost of the Mediterranean world, one where, in Hungary, winter is the shortest and mildest, where flowers bloom earliest, where summer is the warmest, though still pleasant, and where the soft, gentle autumn lasts the longest, thus bringing to ripeness the sweet chestnuts and fiery wines grown on the slopes. The town wall, the proud cathedral and the Renaissance monuments all remind us that during the Middle Ages, Pécs was a centre of Western culture, while the Turkish mosque, which dominates the main square, recalls the magic of the East. Today, Pécs is the centre for science, culture and tourism alike.
