LITERAIURE
PETER HBELARD
/ \ The rapturous and tragic story of those immortal twelfth-century lovers, Heloise and Abelard, comes to vibrant life in this masterly retelling. The framework of this timeless romance is well known: at thirty-seven, Abelard, the famous Parisian scholar, was engaged to tutor the niece of the Canon of Notre Dame, seventeen-year-old Heloise — an association that enmeshed them in a passionate and fatal love. In Miss WaddelFs hands the tale is infused with a living immediacy and a beauty that have made her version a modern classic.

"A novel of deep insight, compelling power, and heartbreaking beauty----"— Saturday Review
"The history of Abelard and Heloise has never been told more tenderly than by the great medieval scholar Helen Waddell in her only novel."
—Chicago Tribune
". . . this is a book whose reading is an experience, the sort of thing that alters one's outlook."
-New York Herald Tribune
