Előszó

I am particularly indebted to two people: first, to Mies van der Rohe himself, whom I have known for more than fifteen years, and whose fascinating reminiscences I have enjoyed throughout those same years. Needless to say, Mies never saw any part of this book until after it was published, and he is in no way responsible for any judgements of his own work - or of that of others - contained in this text. My second important source of information and, I suppose, of inspiration, was Philip C. Johnson, a long-time friend. Mr Johnson was, of course, the first biographer of Mies van der Rohe, and his crisp text on the architect's work, which was published by the Museum of Modern Art in 1947, remains the most authoritative record of Mies's early career. It is characteristic of Mies that he himself has published almost nothing, and that he has encouraged very few others to publish his work. Indeed, references to Mies's early endeavours are scattered through dozens of ' litlle magazines' of the early 1920s; all of these magazines deserve credit for having recognized Mies's genius even when it was manifested only in projects and other sketchy proposals. I should alsó like to thank Walter McQuade, Henry Robbins, and Ivan Von Auw for reading this manuscript and for offering many valuable suggestions. And I am grateful, too, for several weeks spent in splendid isolation at the College of Architecture at Cornell University (a place located somewhere near the North Pole); my time there enabled me to finish the more difficult parts of this book in peace.
