The 28 chapters of the present book ore dedicated to the most important directions explored by the architecture of the twentieth century. The outstanding quality of the illustrations employed has been achieved with the support of celebrated architectural photographers and the use of authentic visual documentation from archives all over the world. The 450, predominantly large-format photographs are accompanied by 150 drawings which take a look behind the façades. Complementing the whole is a comprehensive biographical appendix which traces the careers of the most famous architects of the period.

The architecture of the 20th century is distinguished by its astonishing diversity. Some architects emphasize the artistic, others the social aspects of their work. The present volume follows the contrasting succession of pioneering industrial structures from the 19th century right up to the most recent trends of the late 20th century.
Peter Gössel: MA in theatre studies, sociology and modern German literature from Erlangen University, 1982. During his studies he was involved in various film productions. He worked as a research assistant at the Centrum Industriekultur in Nuremberg from 1984 to 1986, since when he has been a free-lance exhibition designer.
Gabriele Leuthöuser: Graduated in history and German from Erlangen, 1978. Research assistant at the Centrum Industriekultur until 1984, she now works free-lance for exhibitions, museums and industrial companies. She has designed numerous publications. Vissza
