The history is brilliantly summarized - from the pre-lslamic nomads of Arabia, the life of Muhammad and the astonishing rise of Arab power which followed, through the great Arab empires and the centuries of Ottoman rule, to the Western colonial period, the tragedy of Palestine and the modern Arab renaissance, reinforced by the new power of oil. It shows how the consequences of the centuries of struggle for dominance between Christendom and the Islamic world survive to this day in various forms.
An important section of the book surveys the Arab countries in gazetteer fashion. The final section, from a personal point of view, considers the Arabs, their characteristics, aspirations and future.
