Although he could turn his hand to anything, he is best known as a painter of majestic and tragic emotions, of the great moments in the lives of great men. The selection here shows many of his historical canvases and his mural allegories, and also a wide range of the Moroccan paintings, portraits of his intimate friends and some magnificent animal studies.
Without Delacroix many facets of Romanticism would never have received a worthy embodiment in painting. He pioneered a more musical concept of painting, deriving from the inner consciousness, which was also of great interest to those who came after him.
