Ian Jeffrey read history at M^nTchester University and went on to postgraduate studies in Italian Renaissance art at the Courtauld Institute. Since 1970 he has taught art history át the Univérsity of London Gold-smiths' College. His writings have appeared in^e London Magazine, Studio International and Creative Camera, and he has organized or collaborated in a number of exhibitions for the Arts Council of Great ^ Britain, including The Real Thing (Hayward Gallery, 1974), a survey o| -British photography from its origins; Cityscape (Royal Academy, 1978), on urban themes in the art of the United States, Britain and Germany; and most recently The Thirties (Hayward Gallery, 1980).
