In this absorbing album József Antall, medical histórián and Director of Budapest's Semmelweis Museum of Medical History, Library and Archives, has collected a veritable treasury from Europe's medical past. Using fine colour plates of primitive surgical instruments and ancient vessels and equipment employed for pharmaceutical purposes by alchemists, together with pictures of their workshops, reproductions of paintings depicting scenes of healing, colour photographs of a variety of medals and manuscripts selected from both Hungárián and foreign sources, and a wealth of educational material, he conjures up the past before us, taking the reader on a conducted tour of the medical practices of ages past, from earliest times to the present day. Each picture is accompanied by explanatory and descriptive material, and both in the introductory essay and in the illustrations emphasis is given to Hungary's role in the medical and pharmaceutical history of Europe.
