ABOUT THIS BOOK
Rarely has any artist been presented in so sparkling and immediate a way as in this little book. Included are reproductions of Pieter Bruegel's greatest paintings accompanied by many full- and double-page details in color; these details "spotlight" fascinating aspects which would ordinarily be lost except in huge reproductions or in the original itself. The accompanying text by Professor Wolfgang Stechow is an important contribution to the reader's enjoyment and understanding of this great Flemish master.
The Pocket Library of Great Art will ultimately constitute the most remarkable collection of art-in-reproduction ever published. Each new volume, as it presents the life-enriching values which art can give, will bring you closer to that comprehensive knowledge of the great masters which all cultured people would like to have.

I
BRUEGEL
TEXT BY WOLFGANG STECHOW
Professor of Fine Arts, Oberlin College
Pieter Bruegel's art is so Universal in scope, so rich in feeling and humor, that it has always been loved. His strikingly individualistic genius opened new horizons for Flemish and North European painting. In 1550 a trip south introduced him to Italian humanism and the Italian landscape; he returned to Flanders and, still remaining faithful to his native subjects, began to paint ordinary folk at work and play with a new breadth of style and in a lusty, heroic manner. He took ordinary incidents of peasant life—the harvest, hunters in the snow, a dance, children playing—and transformed them into some of the world's most treasured paintings. Even his fantastic grotesques and allegories—hangovers of the medieval imagination—were treated in a mood of secular realism. Bruegel's teeming, vivacious panorama of the follies and pleasures of six-teenth-century Flemish life may make the spectator laugh or even send a shiver down his spine; it never fails to afford the deepest and most memorable enjoyment.
