Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was not only a central figure in the Impressionist movement, but a seminal influence on the development of modern art. He was the only artist to exhibit in all eight of the Impressionist exhibitions between 1874 and 1886, and his letters contain important statements about many of the theoretical aspects and practical implications of Impressionism. At the same time he was the friend and teacher of many painters -including Cézanne and Gauguin in their formative stages - as well as, for a while, acting as a spokesman for Neo-Impressionism. This book concentrates on the evolution of Pissarro's painting, but this is done in the knowledge that he was a dedicated draughtsman, an influential theoretician and a man with firm political beliefs.
