ALAINE POLCZ (b. 1924) is a psychologist and the author
of several books in her field. A Wartime Memoir: Hungary
1944-1945 is a first-person account of her life - and the lives
of those close to her - as first the Germans, then the Russians
closed in on the town where she lived. Exciting, shocking
and revealing, it is a journey into a piece of Central-
European history and a testament to the fighting spirit
of a woman whose every moment was a challenge and
protest against the inhumanity of war. First published
in Hungarian in 1991, A Wartime Memoir has
since been translated into a number of other languages.
This is its first appearance in English.
ALBERT TEZLA was professor of English and world
literature at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, for
thirty-three years. His recent works include
The Hazardous Quest: Hungarian Immigrants in the
