There is more to an egg than meets the eye. Behind the scenes there are poultry which are fed and housed and, in many cases, looked after with loving care.
This book is concerned with the standard breeds of poultry; majestic birds with distinct characteristics and colour. They come from all parts of the World-Asia, America, Russia, Italy, France, Belgium, Britain and other countries - to develop into recognized breeds and varieties. This work is believed to be the first attempt to illustrate in full colour large poultry, bantams (where variations from large), ducks, geese, turkeys and guinea fowl. Not since the Victorian era has any major work of this type been attempted and, of course, there have been many changes since that time. As seen from the illustrations, the birds are an excellent example of l>ow selection can change and improve a breed as well as create many new breeds. The text explauis how the breeds developed and concise descriptions face the coloured illustrations which are based on paintings by the Hampshire artist Charles Francis; more than 150 pairs of birds are shown. The first edition was produced for the Poultry Club Centenary in 1977. This new, THIRD edition now includes drawings on the "points of the fowl" is well as being modified to incorporate the latest changes. This m^or work on the various breeds comes at an opportune time when interest in poultry is at a high level.
