JANE AUSTEN'S life was uneventful. She was born in 1775 in Hampshire, the daughter of a clergyman (that is, a priest of the Church of England). She went to various schools, lived in various towns and villages, wrote six novels, of which four were published during her life, and died in 1818.
During that time she lived the quiet country life of any English middle-class family of the time, and it is this life that she describes. She was little touched by outside events, although during the wars against Napoleon two of her brothers became admirals, commanding many ships.
But Jane Austen is the first great modern English novelist. She is very sensitive to her society, and is always concerned with a moral problem, how to make other people happy by consideration of their feelings and their needs.
In Pride and Prejudice, as in her other masterpiece, Emma, the heroine is very like Jane Austen herself in many ways. So, when we find that Elizabeth is proud, perhaps this is Jane Austen... Tovább
